Participation and Activism in a Democracy in Transformation
Organized by Luciana Tatagiba, Debora Rezende de Almeida, Adrian Gurza Lavalle, and Marcelo Kunrath Silva, the book Participation and Activism: Between Setbacks and Resistance, published by Zouk in 2022, emerges at a critical moment in history, as democracy faces deep and complex challenges. The work seeks to understand how contemporary political struggles—amid the rise of the far right—are transforming the nature of participation and activism.
In recent years, Brazilian society has undergone a series of transformations that have given rise to terms like “death of democracy,” “crisis of democracy,” and “de-democratization.” These concepts reflect the political and social shifts shaping the global landscape, with the rise of far-right movements in many parts of the world, including Brazil. The book addresses these critical issues in an innovative way.
Participation and Activism focuses on the dynamic interactions between state and society. The chapters offer a deep analysis of the relationships between political elites and state authorities. The authors emphasize the need to understand how state-society interactions both shape and are shaped by processes of democratization and de-democratization.
The book is divided into three parts, each addressing different facets of this evolving scenario. The first part examines how the rise of the far right to power has affected participatory institutions, highlighting the need to understand the factors behind the variation in outcomes of participation in these spaces.
The second part explores new actors in activism, emphasizing their diverse political positions and the interplay between online and offline spaces. The third and final section invites readers to reflect on how deep transformations are challenging traditional concepts of participation and activism.
